ILLINOIS GOVERNOR PAT QUINN KICKS OFF STATEWIDE “CALL FOR PHOTOS” CAMPAIGN;
OFFERS SUPPORT FOR THE EDUCATION CENTER AT THE WALL
Washington, D.C. – The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF) today announces that Illinois Governor Pat Quinn has officially endorsed the organization’s campaign to build The Education Center at The Wall. In a written statement to VVMF, Governor Quinn offered his support, and stressed that the campaign is vital to the legacy of veterans and their families because it acknowledges service members who died during the Vietnam war while defending the freedoms that all Americans enjoy.
Governor Quinn makes the announcement as VVMF, in partnership with HISTORY®, is hosting a ceremony at the City of Chicago’s Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the Chicago River Walkto support its “Call for Photos,” a campaign to collect a photo for each of the 58,272 service members whose names are memorialized on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The collected photos will be featured as part of a permanent exhibit in the Education Center at The Wall.
In the statement, Governor Quinn says, “There are not enough words that could be said or monuments that could be erected to effectively express the gratitude that this country has for their service, however, The Vietnam Veterans Memorial and The Education Center at the Wall are small steps toward acknowledging their contributions and in making the ultimate sacrifice for their country.”
The Education Center at The Wall is a facility being built on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., that will put faces to the more than 58,000 names on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The Center will tell the stories of those who served in Vietnam and recognize the values common to all service members.
Quinn joins 23 other governors who have provided endorsements. Jan C. Scruggs, Founder and President of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, says, “The men and women whose names are on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, including 2,398 heroes from Illinois, deserve the respect and gratitude of us all. We are honored to gain the support of so many across the country, and proud of Governor Quinn’s endorsement as we build a tribute to the service and sacrifice of fallen soldiers and ensure their stories will be remembered always.”
Governor Quinn continues, “In order to effectively feature these veterans, citizen participation is necessary. I encourage all residents of the State of Illinois to speak to their family, friends and neighbors about what they can do to help this effort. If you know of a service member who fought and died in this war, I encourage you to provide their photograph to the VVMF for inclusion on The Wall.”
“It is up to us to never forget these brave men and women,” the Governor poignantly concludes.
