Bob and Brenda Dobek
Site Managers, The Wall That Heals
For Bob and Brenda Dobek, driving The Wall That Heals to communities nationwide is a job that takes them “on the road again.” Before becoming site managers for The Wall That Heals in 2010, the Dobeks successfully ran their own business, B Team Inc., for nine years.
The married couple is honored to be serving as the site managers for The Wall That Heals and is glad they can help bring healing and education to communities across America. Bob, a veteran, is especially glad to have a job that allows him to be a part of the military community again and reconnect with fellow soldiers.
For Brenda, the escort into each town is what hits home the most.
“The most rewarding part of the job is going through a small town where all the residents are lining the street waving flags and saluting as the motorcycle procession passes through,” she said. “It is there that the service members on The Wall get their welcome home and praise that they deserve. It makes me cry but it also makes me proud to be a part of this honor.”
Bob is from Novi, Michigan, a town just outside of Detroit. He graduated from high school in 1970 and enlisted in the Army. His active duty military career took him around the world, including Korea and Germany. Bob earned numerous decorations throughout his career, including the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and National Defense Service Medal with two devises. After leaving active duty, Bob served stints with the Michigan and Iowa Army National Guard and Army Reserve. He retired from the military in 1995 and began driving long haul with Brenda.
Brenda was born in Hamilton, Ohio. She studied accounting and banking at Indiana University East as well as computer training at Des Moines Area Community College.
They were married in 1987 and have six grandchildren between them.
Throughout their years on the road, the Dobeks made safety a top priority and that dedication paid off. In April 2009, they were awarded a certificate of safe driving for achieving 1 million miles without accidents or tickets. They have also earned 13 winter safe driving awards.
As a veteran, Bob understands the importance of honoring those who serve. “While I was never in Vietnam, I understand the sacrifice our soldiers gave and the respect they deserve for that sacrifice,” he said. It is this connection that drives the Dobeks to honor and remember all who served in defense of our great nation.
